Q&As
Why did you choose to study in Santiago?
I chose to study in Santiago because I wanted to immerse myself in a culturally rich environment that would also help me improve my Spanish-speaking skills. I was deeply interested in Chile's political history, and the Santiago program offered me an opportunity to explore that interest hands-on. Furthermore, as someone who constantly seeks a balance between big-city life and access to nature trails, Santiago provided both--- along with an efficient public transportation system that made it easy to explore.
How did studying away support your academic growth?
Studying away was the perfect opportunity to rebuild proactive study habits in a slower-paced environment. At times, it can be difficult to focus on the fundamentals of good study habits and maintain work-life balance when assignments are piling up and looming over your shoulder. While I was still academically challenged in Santiago, the slower-pace of courses made it easier to establish habits that helped me stay on top of assignments while also taking care of myself and exploring the city.
What did you learn about yourself during your study away experience, especially through any challenges or major cultural adjustments?
I learned the importance of giving myself grace, especially during times when I felt daunted by the cultural adjustments I was encountering. I remember feeling extremely frustrated with myself during the first couple of weeks of the program because I couldn't fully communicate what I wanted to say in Spanish. Allowing myself grace and embracing the challenge I was facing was essential for my growth-- both as a person and as a language learner. Over time, I spent more time practicing and communicating became much easier.
Briefly describe a typical day and your favorite part of daily life in your program location.
A typical day for me would begin around 7:00 a.m. I'd go to the gym before my 9:00 a.m. class and make a very rushed attempt at breakfast before hurrying to the metro to get to the Stanford Center. I usually finished classes around 3:00 or 4:00 p.m, depending on the day, and would walk back to LivinnX. Once I made it back to the student residence, I'd make dinner and catch up with my roommates about our respective days.
My favorite part of daily life in Santiago was the walk back from the Stanford Center. I'd often stop at random shops or street vendors and discover new restaurants to try. It left me with plenty of souvenirs to stuff into my already overpacked luggage when I returned home.
If applicable, how did participating in an internship, volunteership or experiential-based project help you grow professionally? What specific skills did you gain?
N/A.
What was the most essential item you took with you on the program?
The most essential item I took with me was elderberry gummies. I studied abroad as Chile was entering its winter season, so cold and flu season was approaching its peak. I found them helpful for boosting my immune system as my body adjusted to the new environment.
What advice would you give students who are considering studying away?
First and foremost, I would encourage anyone considering studying away to go for it! No matter which program you choose, studying away is an unforgettable experience that fosters personal growth and maturity. Secondly, I would say to not compare your experience to anyone else's--- take advantage of the opportunities that come your way and maximize your time abroad.
