Petition to Meet Major Requirement
OPSTANG 95 PETITION
How to apply this course toward your major or minor:
Students in several majors/minors may petition this course toward degree requirements. The process is generally straightforward:
- Consult your Undergraduate Advising Director (UAD)
- Submit the syllabus and supporting materials
- Ensure that your final project aligns clearly with your disciplinary background and field
While the course is interdisciplinary in themes, student work is designed to be discipline-specific and in-depth. Depending on the student’s academic background and goals, projects may emphasize computational workflows and large-scale data analysis, sensing and observation systems, analysis of systems performance and operational constraints, governance, institutional systems, policy analysis, among others.
Current academic pathways include:
- Aeronautics & Astronautics: approved as a major technical elective
- Data Science: may be petitioned toward the major or minor
- Computer Science: may be petitioned toward the major or minor, with a computational final project
Management Science & Engineering: may be petitioned toward the major or minor, with Operations & Analytics–aligned coursework
Sample petition language: I am requesting that OSPSANTG 95 (Dark Skies, Big Data) count toward my major or minor requirements. The course includes discipline-specific analytical and/or computational work applied to real datasets and systems. The final project requires students to apply methods, tools, or frameworks from their discipline in a way that is consistent with the goals and expectations of the field. In particular, my final project focuses on: [brief description of the student’s project, methods, datasets, systems, or analytical approach].
