OSPSANTG 44: Introduction to Borderlands Literature of the Américas (Way: A-II, EDP)
Instructor: Jose David Saldivar
Through a comparative analysis of a Pinchot dictator novel, By Night in Chile, by Chilean Roberto Bolaño and the imaginative work of Mexico-US Borderlands writers Yuri Herrera, Sara Uribe, and the Los Angeles artist Jay Lynn Gomez, this course defines and explores new trends in how we read and write in a globalized and hemispheric era. Calling attention to fresh innovations in form, voice, perspective, and representation, this course also affirms the lead role of Chilean, Mexican, and US Chicanx artists and writers in reshaping hemispheric and global literatures. We also focus on the Chilean films and documentaries by Patricio Guzman (La Nostalgia de la Luz (Nostalgia of the Light), La Batalla de Chile (The Battle for Chile, Parts 1 and 2) , and the sci-fi film, Sleep Dealer, about the Mexico-US border and globalization, by Alex Rivera.
