Main content start

Instructor: Sergio Missana

The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to literature produced by women in Latin America during the 20th Century. The course focuses on some of the key figures of poetry, narrative fiction, theater and testimonio, such as Mistral, Garro, Lispector, Poniatowska, Valenzuela, Eltit and Menchú. Although it is designed as a close reading course with a strong emphasis on analysis and discussion of the required texts, it will situate the readings within their cultural and political context, including issues raised in literary texts that reflect the evolution of the condition of women in Latin America during the period. Topics include gender differences and relationships, tradition vs. transgression, relationship between changes in the status of women and other egalitarian transformations, women writers and the configuration of literary canons.
