OSPSANTG 118X: Artistic Expression in Latin America (Way: A-II)
Instructor: César Albornoz
This course analyzes the cultural changes that have taken place in Chile under conditions of economic liberalization and political democratization at all three levels of culture: the elite culture, the mass-media culture, and the popular or folk culture. It encompasses the reception of cultural meanings from the center of the world social system (the United States, the European Union and Japan), their reformulation to respond to local conditions, and their export under the shape of cultural artifacts that can still be understood by the non-Latin American members of the world social system, while still containing innovative elements rooted in the regional-local culture. Focuses on the following realms of culture: scientific research, higher education, electronic mass-media, the weekly and daily press, the visual arts, and popular music.
